Creating a Map

Previous

A key part of the prospectus is the pathways map, having looked at the previous two prospectus we decided this needed a redesign as it makes very little sence and is quite difficult to read and understand. I was tasked with this, I have changed the direction you read it in from bottom to top, which seems a bit counter entuative, to left to right to allow for more ease in reading.

Working on spreads

We were to meet with Chloe again and she wanted to see a bigger range of spreads so she could really get a feel for what the layouts might look like.

Re working order

After creating our new oder from the deconstuction of the previous prospectus coupled with our own needs and wants for the publication we had a meeting with Chloe to see if this met the colleges requirments for the most part yes, but there were a few minor changes to make regarding order of certain sections etc...

Taking Old Prospectus apart/ Getting our order

Something that we had to do regarding the prospectus is to take the old apart and really identify the different sections and identify what was need where it was needed and how it would be most effectively showcased and where it would be most effective throughout the publication. This was a huge task, we went into great detail to get what we think is a good order.

Working with Ben (Photographer) Art Direction

Working with Ben has given us all an opertunity to engage with the art direction side of photgraphy. This has really allowed us to get the images we want and to help Ben get a feel for what we are trying to create here. On this occation myself and Max were on hand, but it is a role we have all taken at one point or another throughout the photography process. In conjunction with Chloe we have been able to compile a breadth of photos that we all agree shows the college in the best possible light, really expressing the needs and wants of ourselves and the college.

Starting Photography

One of the first things we needed to start getting on with was the photography, with there being so much to do and having to get the right shots while it is busiest in university this was imperitive it started right away.

Starting down the road at Vernon Street we have begun the photography, as you can see by these phots we want to achieve a documentary style photography, a through the eyes of the student sort of feel to really allow the reader to connect with their suroundings.

Aproval and Moving forward

After the meeting we had a quick chat with Chloe and she seemed very happy, as were we, it went well. The senior management involved in the meeting were inpressed by our ideas and our vision for the project. They did not seem to have any major questions that could not be answered in the presentation. We had to wait a few days but we soon got comformation that everything had been approved and we had the go ahead to continue with the project.

Preparing for Presentation

In preperation for the presentation we have created a set of potetial covers including stock, colours and weights. new layouts fitting the new brought together concept and we also will talk through our decitions in terms of photography, we have decided to work with Ben Harris as our photographer, Ben is a second year photographer we know and we feel his work is perfect for the style of photgraphy we want to persue through the prospectus.

Finding a photographer

–
In convosation with Chloe and between ourselves we needed to find and decide on a photgrapher, we had a vision in our minds of what we wanted to achieve and how we wanted the photography to represent the college, but we needed to make a decition on who could carry this out for us. We thought of a few ways of doing this, either just choosing someone or putting it out to the college as a call for interest. The only thing we are certain about at this time is we feel it should be a current student doing the photography, firstly because we have such a wealth of talent within the college but also because it is a good opertunity to collaberate with someone who knows the college well and can really show this through the photos they take.

Stock and samples

In preperation for the presentation to the senior managment we ordered different stocks from a range of suppliers, to show as physical example but also to help us make decisions in terms of what stock we wanted to use for the cover and the internal pages. We recieved several swatch books and dummies of various weights and coated and non coated papers. The boys excluding me also had ma meeting with GFSmith which I was unable to attend, unfortunatley, this was very useful because they brought along several different examples of other institutes prospectus that had been done on there paper.
